In the run-up to SXSW, performers Coast Modern just premiered their second single, “Animals,” on Pigeons and Planes, who are calling it “perfect for this transition out of the winter months.” The song explores the internal struggle against our animal nature, but at, like, a teen pool party. The Los Angeles duo (“America’s Newest Band,” according to Twitter) burst onto the scene late last year with “Hollow Life,” which has amassed over 400,000 plays on SoundCloud and almost a million on Spotify. After SXSW and a short string of shows, Coast Modern will be following English indie rockers The Wombats on tour this summer, footnote, “more festivals and tour dates to be announced.”
“There’s freedom in the fact that no one knows exactly what we’re all doing here, so we can make up the rules as we go along,” says Coast Modern. And like a next generation MGMT, they take on the cause using indie pop. For instance, lyrics “What I thought I knew/I can’t seem to find” go along with jittering castanets, understated horns, and near-constant background “Oohs.” However, a tough(ish) beat keeps things cool, despite all of the LA sun-drenchedness. So, check out what the kids are doing these days.
