With a name like Josh Record, perhaps it is unsurprising that this singer/songwriter from Brixton, UK is writing and creating music that has acquired the attention of so many. Record’s story of success began with his first release in 2012, when he was working with the indie label, National Anthem. “For Your Love”, the lead track, hit the number two spot on iTunes Singer Songwriter charts, catching the attention of many, including BBC Radio 1 deejay, Zane Lowe. Following that initial success, Record released another self-produced EP, The War, which really sealed his destination for stardom. In 2013, Record was signed to Virgin and went on to release “Bones”in November, also a radio hit that has been remixed several times.
Record has opened for Lorde, London Grammar, Bastille, and Sam Smith; but now he’s selling out his own headline shows and will be hopping around the UK all summer, playing at multiple festivals including T in the Park, the Y Not Festival, and the V Festival.
But his traveling is not limited to singing and playing his guitar. Paul Lester from The Guardian praises Record for being “the saint of singer-songwriters,”having volunteered in Roehampton, Kenya, Nairobi, and elsewhere. Record’s charity work around the world is certainly impressive but more importantly, selfless. The vulnerability heard in his lyrics and the uplifting power of his music can likely be attributed to this worldliness and honest work he has done. “For Your Love,”for example, tells a tear-jerker story of sacrifice for love. The track was re-released on Virgin Records in March 2014, and the music video is available to watch on Vevo (but I have to warn you, it’s heavy!).
Pillars will be Record’s debut album, set for release on July 14th. It is generating positive reviews, tagged as “musical magic”by The Sunday Times Culture. “Wide Awake,”his single set for release a week before, will be a sure favorite, with undeniable Bon Iver influence reverberating through the choir-like chorus. Both the album and single are available for pre-order on iTunes now—check it out!
